History of Beverly:
The community of Beverly is known one of the 77 community areas of Chicago. Located on the south side of the city on the southwestern edge of Chicago the town’s borders are 87th Street on the north; Beverly Avenue, Hale Avenue and Vincennes Road on the east; 107th Street on the south; and Francisco Avenue and Western Avenue on the west.
Beverly was developed amidst the mid-19th Century race to industrialize the area’s former farming and railroad communities into urban centers. The effort was spurred on by the 1889 completion of the suburban line of the Rock Island Railroad, which runs parallel with the eastern border of the Blue Island ridge. Its position on the ridge paved the way for the area to become an exclusive streetcar suburb. The homes and large lots in the area are reflective of that historic distinction.
Beverly is actually located on the highest elevation in Chicago.
The area offers swift access to Chicago’s bustling financial markets, shopping centers, airports and cultural attractions. However, the area still retains the peaceful and quiet wooded suburb feel. Beverly has been designated one of the top five largest historic districts in any major metropolitan area in the nation. It is serviced by the Metra Rock Island Line.
The area features a hilly terrain. It’s one of only a few areas in the Chicagoland area that does so. That is due to the location of the community and its geography, known as the Blue Island Ridge. In the early days of the area’s settlement, it (along with Morgan Park) was known as North Blue Island.
Beverly is known for some of its high caliber educational institutions. Many of those are part of the Catholic Parish system. Four parishes comprise the area: St. Barnabas, Christ the King, St. John Fisher and St. Cajetan. Several all-boy schools within the system include Brother Rice, Mt. Carmel, St. Rita and St. Laurence. All-girl schools in the system include Mother McAuley, Queen of Peace and Mount Assisi Academy (which closed in 2014). The single co-ed institution in the area is Marist Catholic High School.
Some very notable people hail from Beverly. They include: George Wendt, television actor; Mike Castle, actor; Patricia Monaghan, poet, writer, spiritual activist, Vincent LoVerde, American Hockey League player, Craig Robinson, actor and comedian (played Darryl Philbin on the NBC television series The Office); and Lana and Lilly Wachowski (known as the Wachowskis), film directors best known for The Matrix trilogy.
