The south Chicago suburb of Markham, Illinois is said to have been all beach over 10,000 years ago. The terrain was much different, of course, in 1925 when the village was incorporated with a population of less than 300 people.  Named for Charles H. Markham, president of the Illinois Central Railroad (in the early 1900s), which played a large part in many of the developing south suburban communities.That scant 300 or so citizens grew to 2,753 by 1950 when the village developed into what's called a 'bedroom' (or residential) community.


After years of dominance by the railroad, an an airport was developed at 165th Street and Kedzie Avenue and represented the nearest field outside of Chicago.

Incorporated as a city in 1924, Markham's most notable citizens have included Floyd Fields, retires safety for the San Diego Chargers as legendary R&B artist, Curtis Mayfield.
